Greatest Story Ever Told

Now Moses down in Egypt,
As the story's often told,
Believed in God and by His power,
Became a leader bold.

Likewise with Joshua,
At the battle of Jericho,
When he bade the people march and shout,
And the priests, their trumpets blow.

Samson was a mighty man,
There was none so strong and brave,
Till Delilah found his secret,
And sent him to his grave.

God saved righteous Noah,
When He sealed him in the ark,
And Jacob Wrestled with the Lord,
One night when all was dark.

And Daniel in the Lion's den,
Is a story known to all,
As well as Lot's wife turning back
To become a pile of salt.

Little David killed the giant,
And cut off his wicked head,
And then we read of Lazarus,
Raised up from the dead.

But the story that's important
To a world that's dark and lost,
Is the one of our Redeemer,
Who died upon the cross.

He was born of virgin Mary,
And in a manger was laid down,
For the Inn was full and crowded,
There was no room in the town.

The angels sang the praises
Of this one who knew no sin,
Glory to God in the highest,
Peace on earth; good will toward men.

John baptized Christ in Jordan,
And God's Spirit as a dove,
Was a sign to John the Baptist,
Here was the Prince of Peace and Love.

Jesus fasted forty days,
Then Satan came along,
And said 'If thou be the Son of God,
Make bread of all these stones.

But Jesus answered wisely,
This one who cheats and robs,
"Thou shalt not live by bread alone,
But by the word of God."

He, through the land went teaching,
And doing many deeds,
And telling many parables,
Like the sower and the seeds.

Jesus cured the leper,
And healed the withered hand,
And with five loaves and two small fishes,
He fed the mighty band.

He taught about forgiveness,
And greediness for gold;
For what shall all this profit a man,
If he loses his own soul?

Repentance, faith, believing
Were things He also taught;
This is the way of redemption,
For with a price His saints are bought.

Jesus suffered often,
Before He died upon the cross,
Then told His Church to go, and preach,
For all the world is lost.

A crown of thorns they gave Him,
They spat upon Him too,
And mockingly they called Him,
King of all the Jews.

Then after all this mocking,
They nailed Him to the tree,
And there our Saviour gave His life,
That sinners might be free.

They put the Saviour in a grave,
And sealed it with a stone,
But when the women came to see Him,
An angel stood alone.

"Come see the place" the angel said,
"Where the Saviour lay."
Herein lies the hope of all the saints
Who await that rapturous day.

For our Lord from the grave arose,
Over death He won the fight,
And so 'twill be with all who believe,
And are living in the light.

"For God so loved the world", said Jesus,
"He gave His only Son";
And by believing in His name,
The victory is won!
