HOPE

There’s ne’er a night so gloomy dark
No light could pierce its way,
Nor a morn so cold but one small spark
Might kindle warmth to cheer the day.

Ne’er a heart so broken
But time can change its grief,
No pain so all consuming
But God can bring relief.

Pray, name this fuel that spurs man on,
In dark and cold and pain!
What causes man, in spite of grief
To marshal strength and try again?

From the tiny little acorn
There springs the mighty oak;
Man’s spirit, likewise, soars aloft
From the smallest grain of hope.

When brightest dreams are shattered
And dismal darkness reigns,
Then hope that won’t be vanquished
Works and strives again!

No matter the odds ‘gainst victory
Or bitter the retreat
As long as hope is present
There’ll never be defeat.
