BITTERSWEET

If life’s waters were never bitter;
If we never knew defeat;
If no man were our enemy;
Then would friendship seem so sweet?

Could we enjoy the fruits of victory,
Of a battle never fought?
Could we learn to value friendship,
If all, our favor sought?

So let the bitter waters come;
We know they’re bound to end;
And we’ll place a higher value,
On the fellowship of friends.
