The Hypocrite's Prayer

Yes Lord, you know I love you~
Surely you know I do.
I do all the the things you ask me,
{except for one or two.}

Almost every Sunday morning
I go to church, you know,
{'cept sometimes I go fishing
or take the kids up to the snow.}

And you know I give to support the work
{if there's anything left to spare
after paying for the things I want}
But at least you know I care!

And I try to keep my kids in church
but there's so many other things,
like dances, games and parties
and sit~ins and "happenings'!

And after all, they're young just once
and children must have fun,
{'course one is in reform school~
I don't know where he got that gun~}

Yes Lord, I love you very much
but you know on Wednesday nights
the very best shows are on T.V.~
There's cowboy shows and fights!

And on every Sunday evening~
Well, I'd really like to go,
but I can't seem to wake up from my nap~
But I love you Lord, you know!

Why, last week I told a friend,
{I've known him 'bout a year}
that I'm supposed to be a Christian
and I couldn't join him in a beer.

And if he should ever ask me
the way of eternal life?
Well, I've got the preacher's number somewhere,
or I'll have him ask my wife.

Yes Lord, you know I love you
and I'll prove it all someday,
{If I can but discover
some easy, pleasant way!}
