PASS IT ON
The lighted torch now in our hands
Is not one new ablaze,
Those now fallen were handed it,
Ready lit in other days.
They took it from their fathers’ hands,
And they in turn from others;
From hand to hand the lamp is passed,
From sisters and from brothers.
Now we in kind must hand it on,
‘Ere we from life have passed,
‘Til all the bearers gather home,
Around the throne at last.

I know that this poem is about the torch of the truth and salvation but it could just as easily be the torch of freedom passed on to be carried forth by each generation. Both ways, it struck a chord with me.
