MEMORIES

It’s a simple marker -
And as they stand and gaze,
Each one remembers;
Happier Days!

Mother recollects
The babe that she held;
She even recalls
That first movement she felt.

Dad harks back
To a tangled line,
When nothing was caught -
But the day turned out fine!

He remembers a football
He tossed with his son,
And the hoop in the driveway
Where they played one on one.

Little brother thinks fondly
Of being rescued one day,
When Big Brother showed up,
And the bullies ran away.

The sweetheart or wife -
Recalls the feel of his arms,
And that little grin
That was one of his charms.

As each one bows
And remembers this one;
Husband, sweetheart,
brother or son,

A nation pauses,
For her freedom, gives thanks
To this patriot, this hero
Who refused to break ranks.
