I’LL UNDERSTAND
When I was but a little lad
I didn’t understand
My father’s counsel and advice,
Nor the sternness of his hand.
But now that years grow shorter,
And the days so swiftly fly,
I know the meaning of his words;
“You’ll understand, Son, by and by.”
Today, as my heavenly Father
Leads me by His hand,
I find I’m like a child again;
I just can’t understand!
I can’t understand how trouble
Is often, blessing in disguise,
Nor how faith, (which oft’ seems foolish)
Is the pathway of the wise!
Sometimes it seems His ways are hard ,
And heavy is the hand
With which my Father ’spanks’ me;
And I don’t understand.
But someday, this life of childhood
Will be forever past,
And all the Father’s children
Will gather home at last.
Then I’ll forget the little trials
That so beset me in this land,
And like a child grown to manhood,
I’ll understand!
